I designed, presented, and performed in this chamber concert as a part of the New World Symphony’s “Inside the Music” series. We explored music by composers who are from parts of the world that appear different from our own, and who are creating beautiful music inspired by their surroundings. Through their music, we had the opportunity to get to know communities, rather than stereotypes, and to connect with people in unexpected ways.

Featuring music by current composers from Palestine, El Salvador, Iraq/Kurdistan, and Colombia

The Miami Beach Botanical Garden, the New World Symphony, and local yoga studio Tropical Vinyasa hosted an event celebrating women’s wellness during Women’s History Month. The event began with a panel discussion where several local female entrepreneurs and I discussed the meaning and importance of wellness and how we try to fit it into our busy lives and careers. Following the panel, I performed in an all-female string trio to accompany a yoga class with a program that we carefully chose to match the flow of the class. This event was more than just a celebration in that it clearly inspired everyone in attendance and empowered me personally to recognize and share the power of prioritizing well-being in my life as a busy musician.

I conceived of, programmed, and performed in this New World Symphony concert with the goal of presenting an orchestral concert to new audiences in a fun format that they already know. An interactive concert based on American Idol, musicians and the guest host, Miami DJ Irie, helped the audience to get to know the contestants (instruments), so that they could vote and choose a winner!

For three consecutive years, I was honored to play a part in the nonprofit Human Rights Watch’s annual fundraising gala for their Miami chapter. Each event drew attention to the struggle to increase the rights of a different group of people: women, refugees, and immigrants. As a musical feature to the dinner, I selected and performed chamber music to match that year’s theme. Programming these events introduced me to composers whose music is inspired by current and often traumatic events, and sharing it with an audience outside of a standard concert venue made it feel incredibly impactful.
